Also called the “Sunshine State”, Florida is a fabulous place for a family holiday whenever you can get away as the weather is superb, with lots of fun for all ages and many fine places to eat and to stay.
Give some thought to the semi-tropical climate in Florida when planning your vacation.. Summers are extremely hot and humid, although this is a little less extreme at the coast where breezes provide some relief. Toddlers and babies are more likely to suffer from heat stroke than adults so so a fall or spring trip may be preferable when the air is drier and the temperatures are not so high.
Are you looking for a beach vacation but you’re put off by the prospect of transporting high chairs, cribs and so on? One solution is to opt for one of the great hotels or motels that focus on family vacations and provide amenities such as cribs as standard.
But if Central Florida is your goal so that you can explore all that the theme parks have to offer, you have some additional options. As well as the Disney Resort hotels there are privately owned condos and single family homes available for the length of your stay. These Florida short term rentals offer greater flexibility than hotels, especially when traveling with babies and toddlers. As they have a fully fitted kitchen, preparing baby food is much easier, many have cribs and highchairs available and many of the homes have a private pool.

There are however some things you need to consider when taking babies and toddlers on a vacation to sunny climates such as Florida, to ensure you all enjoy a relaxing safe vacation.
Keep young babies in the shade at all times as sunscreen is unsuitable for use on them for the first six months of their life. Even toddlers and older children should not spend long hours in direct sunlight to eliminate the risk of burning and damaging their sensitive skin. Make applications of sunscreen frequently, especially if they are in and out of the water even on cloudy days as the sun’s rays can still be a great risk through the clouds. If you plan a visit to a water park or a swim in the sea this applies even more.
Remember also to take suitable new baby clothes and toddler’s clothes to protect them from the sun. As the sun’s strong rays can penetrate clothing look for new born baby clothes made of closely woven fabrics in bright or darker colors as these can provide more protection against harmful rays. There is also a product called Sun Guard which you add to your washing machine along with your regular detergent and it provides up to UPF 30 on everyday clothing. It provides protection for up to twenty washes. In addition, be sure to have children’s sun hats that provide cover for the eyes, ears and back of the neck.
Avoid the risk of dehydration by ensuring that babies and young children (as well as adults!) drink lots of fluids.
Remember that young children get tired and bored very quickly, particularly in hot conditions, so plan to take time out for breaks especially if you are visiting theme parks or other attractions. If possible have a rest day between visits – you’ll all find it useful!
One final thought: pay extra attention when you’re near to a pool or beaches because children are fascinated by them and often unprepared for the danger. Simlarly, crowds at malls, theme parks or other busy areas present the risk of children getting lost or wandering away.

Merida is an enchanting city with much to enjoy and little to cause complaint. Approachable and friendly, the citizens find their roots in the Mayan, Spanish, French and Lebanese culture. This is a civilized city where people are civil to one another. Neighbors know each other and often, are related. Family is not just important here, family is everything – as is a sense of community. People belong.
It is safe here. Violent crime is practically unheard of. As in any city of million people, there is petty street crime. However, no matter where you go in the city or at what hour, you will not feel intimidation. There is not that gut sinking fear that exist in so many cities. There is an overall gentleness that pervades.
Handguns are not permitted. There is a large police presence – traffic police, city police, tourist police, state police and federal police. This police presence does deter criminal activity. However, with all these police available, there is not an atmosphere of police repression. The police are here FOR you, they are not out to GET you.

There is a constant flow of activity – buses, bikes, motor scooters, taxis and cars. Occasionally, traffic can be a test of patience in the center city, but it is a testimony to a vibrant community in an ancient city.
Architecturally, Merida is a feast for the eyes. From the grandeur of fabulous French style mansions, to the uncompromising grace of a perfect colonial arch in a small courtyard garden, few places rival Merida in architectural variety and charm. Wander the center city or the outer neighborhoods, and you are delighted when you suddenly stumble upon a turn-of-the-century hacienda, colonial casona, or a charming, worn stone church. There are places here where time literally stands still.

In addition, you may want to place the following items in your trunk: a lawn chair, extra blanket, emergency road kit, umbrellas, water, flashlight and batteries, a battery-powered radio, and windshield wiper cleaner. In the glove compartment include a first aid kit and cell phone charger. Keep all medications in a Ziploc bag in the glove compartment as well.
Another good idea is to take a list of telephone numbers including the hotel or motel where you are staying as well as those of family and friends you may need to contact.
